Why you should start juicing now!

Did you know that when you make juice from raw vegetables, your body absorbs the nutrients within 15 seconds? Talk about an energy shot! No need to buy those sugary and chemical-ish concoctions from your local drug-store or mini mart. Juicing is an all-natural way to boost your energy and feel amazing. When you juice your fruits and veggies, you end up extracting all the water and nutrients from them and leave behind only the plant fibers. By separating the fruit or vegetable from its fiber, we gain access to all of the amazing vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and phytonutrients which are much more easily assimilated by our body than if we were to eat them.

 

This allows your body to absorb the nutrients more quickly, without having to digest the dense bulk of the plant. You can also fit an amazing amount of veggies into a single glass of juice, making it a great way to use up those extra veggies from your garden or CSA share. PLUS, you will end up with a glass of deliciousness that packs a powerful nutritional punch. Although some would also say that the cost of stocking enough fresh organic vegetables to make daily juices can be somewhat expensive, my feeling is that if you stop buying all of the pre-packaged foods/snacks you were buying, you will end up saving money in the long run on your food AND your doctor bills.

 

One more thing before I go:  while you can control the quality of ingredients when you are making fresh juice at home, always read your labels when it comes to buying store-bought juice. These juices can be high in sugar and have a high glycemic load, which may cause blood sugar imbalances.

8 Best Foods to Detox Your Body This Spring

Then this article is for you!  With flu season in high gear, and summer drawing near, now is the perfect time to detox your body! A simple detox is the foundation of a long-lasting, healthy, and vibrant life. Not only is it a program specific to improving your inner body, but detoxing is beneficial for the mind and soul as well.

 

First of all, what is a detox? Detoxing is the process in which you rid your body of the harmful toxins that have built up over a period of time, and in turn, you’ll have a healthier inner & outer body, mind, and soul. Detoxing can help to increase your energy levels and fight fatigue, as well as assist in weight loss and strengthen your immune system!

Here are 8 superfoods that should be making their way into your shopping cart this Spring!

Watercress, Spinach, and Kale are staples to your detox, and can be used in a variety of ways such as smoothies or salads.  Aside from the fact that these leafy greens are packed with high-quality nutrients and vitamins, they also aid in lowering cholesterol, restoring energy levels, and help to decrease your chances of developing cancer.

Asparagus is one of the most beneficial superfoods, offering kidney and bladder cleansing support. Asparagus can be oven roasted with a little bit of seasoning, which brings us to our next two superfoods, Garlic and Cayenne Pepper!

Garlic and Cayenne Pepper act as the perfect bridge from tasteless foods to delectable meals! By seasoning your food with Garlic and/or Cayenne Pepper, not only are you aiding in detoxifying your body, but you’re ensuring that your meals taste delicious! The sulfur found in Garlic works specifically to rid your body of toxins, while Cayenne Pepper helps to support weight loss and promote heart health! Can’t seem to stomach eating raw garlic? Try garlic in pill form, which can be found at most health food stores!

Dried fruit is the perfect alternative to those tempting, yet unhealthy grab-n-go snacks! For example, dice up some dried Peaches and throw it into your morning oats, or snack on dried Apples throughout the day! In moderation, Dried Fruit helps to reduce excess fat and lower cholesterol while aiding in the detoxification process.

So, you believe you have low stomach acid and some of the problems associated with it?
If you have low stomach acid, try these natural solutions FIRST! What are some food solutions
you can try?

Here I share how can you boost your stomach acid levels naturally:

·Drink the juice of up to ½ a large lemon or 1 whole small lemon diluted in water before your meals or first thing in the morning,
whichever works well for you to reduce your symptoms.

·Another option is to drink 1 Tbsp organic, raw, fermented Apple Cider Vinegar diluted in water first
thing in the morning or with your meals.

Both of these foods will gently boost your stomach acid. Drink the amount that works for you. I recommend using a straw in order
to avoid too much acidity in contact with your teeth.

If these natural methods do not prove to be enough, you may choose to supplement gently and carefullywith Betaine HCL as described here.

As always, do not underestimate the importance of stress-management, as chronic stress lowers
stomach acid levels! The cephalic phase of digestion, which involves feeling your hunger, smelling the food,
anticipating the food, allowing saliva to build in your mouth, and eating in a relaxed state and

How to Test and Boost your Stomach Acid

Did you know that your stomach is and needs to be a very acidic place? When your digestion is functioning properly, your stomach is
very acidic, with a PH of 1.0-1.5! Do you know why you need your stomach to be so highly acidic? Make a guess!

Your stomach is the place where foods come in still chunky, (unless you are drinking you meal, think smoothies!) depending on how well you chewed it,
and should leave in a pulverized state, similar to how a smoothie looks after being blended in a high-powered blender. When food leaves the
stomach and enters the small intestine, it should be so well broken down that it is pretty much ready to be absorbed. When your stomach
acid is not sufficient, food is not fully broken down. And, despite how nutritiously you may be eating, you then may not be absorbing the nutrients
from your food! This is a prime example of what I believe – that we are not only what we eat, but what our bodies can do with what we eat.

Reflux, then, contrary to popular belief, is a sign of low stomach acid. It may also be a sign of a hernia at the gastroesophageal sphincter, but more on that later.

Some other symptoms of low stomach acid include nutritional deficiencies such as low vitamin B12 and low iron, gas, bloating, premature aging, and undigested food in your stools.

SO, if you have these symptoms, you probably already know, based on your symptoms, if your stomach acid levels may be low. But, if you want to test your acid levels,
let’s talk about your options.

There is an expensive and accurate test for stomach acid levels called the Heidelburg Stomach Acid Test. It is around $350 and not typically covered by insurance.

There is an easy way, using baking soda, to broadly test your stomach acid levels yourself at home, if you so choose. Do this on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning.

Baking Soda Assessment:
Stir 1 tsp baking soda into an 8-10 oz. glass of water
Smell and think about food – stimulating your Cephalic Phase of Digestion which gets your digestive juices and enzymes flowing
Drink the Glass of Baking Soda Water over a couple of minutes (it tastes a little unpleasant but is definitely doable!)

Results: Acid mixing with baking soda causes burping. Little to no burping likely means you lack stomach acid.

Another way to test stomach acidity is with the use of a stomach acid supplement called Betaine HCL with pepsin. This is my preferred method. Betaine HCL with pepsin supplement is available on my Healthwave dispensary which you can find on my website in the shop, www.soulpathwellness.com/shop/ or it is also available in your local health food store or online. I prefer the
brand Thorne which is what I carry in my dispensary. I would recommend starting low and slow with this supplement (as with any new supplements) if you choose to try it.

Betaine HCL stomach acid test*:
*Note – The use of Betaine HCL with Pepsin is NOT RECOMMENDED for those who have an irritated stomach lining or a stomach/peptic ulcer.
*Note – If you do not experience warming in your stomach when using this supplement, then your stomach acid levels are low.

On day one, take one Betaine HCL supplement pill with dinner. On Day two, take one pill with lunch and one with dinner. On day three, take one pill with breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In this same manner, work your way up to two pills at the start of each meal. If you feel a warming sensation in your stomach at any point, back down to the last level you were at and stay there. This is the amount of acid supplementation you need currently with meals, especially with meals containing protein.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and sometimes it just doesn’t fit into our schedule the way it should. How we begin the day will determine how the rest of the day goes. It will determine if we feel energized or if we feel dragging with a lack of energy. What we put in our bellies is directly related to how we physically feel. So if you are a skip breakfast and grab the coffee mug morning person then this blog is totally for you.

We all need and crave energy. I know I do! Sometimes it is so easy to want to grab a quick bowl of cereal or even forget breakfast and just get through the morning on 1-2 cups of coffee for the energy needed to survive the day. I don’t want you to just survive through the day though; I want you to thrive through the day. I also don’t want you to go on the “crash and crave” roller coaster for the entire day. If you begin your morning with caffeinated coffee and sugar, you will crash, and you will be either too tired to make it through your responsibilities or you will be reaching for another cup of coffee to get through a few more hours.

Smoothies are another quick alternative to a fast breakfast that can help energize us throughout the entire day. When you toss in some greens, a little fruit, and a healthy liquid like coconut water or coconut milk, you are bound to feel energetic and ready to take on the day. Starting the day with a smoothie also gives you well needed antioxidants which help protect our bodies from free radicals, and it is a great low glycemic start which is important for many reasons, including hormone balance. Eating a low glycemic breakfast will help curb your sugar cravings for the entire day and it will also help with not crashing.

I also believe that you are not only what you eat, you are what your body can do with what you eat! That means chewing your food really well, or blending it, gives your body a break from the work of breaking your food down! When you have a smoothie, the many nutrients in it are ready to be absorbed easily by your body.

Next time you want a quick breakfast, try a delicious smoothie that will leave you feeling energized and motivated. A morning smoothie will provide your body with the nutrients it needs to produce natural energy and naturally boost your metabolism. So, what are you reaching for tomorrow morning? I know I will be pulling out my blender and getting ready for some long lasting energy.

Here is my favorite smoothie these days!

Blueberries and Cream Smoothie

1 cup unsweetened almond milk
1 tablespoon homemade coconut milk kefir
1 teaspoon green powder
2 leafs kale
3 tablespoons hemp seed hearts
8 drops stevia
1 tablespoon ground flax seeds
1/2 teaspoon alcohol free vanilla extract
1 cup frozen blueberries

Throw all ingredients into your blender and blend. Pour into a glass… and Enjoy!

How Does Food Affect your Mood?

Did you know that food has vibrations that allow it to create change in our bodies on a cellular level? Food that is alive and from the earth will energize and invigorate you, while processed, pre-packaged, dead food will leave you feeling lethargic and uninspired, like a light that has fizzled out. Makes sense doesn’t it?

Dark green leafy vegetables are full of chlorophyll, which is basically liquid sunshine. It is the substance in plants that allows them to absorb light from the sun and convert it into usable energy. When we consume raw dark green vegetables such as kale, broccoli, and Swiss chard, we fill our body with the equivalent of the plant’s life blood – the very thing that allows a seed to flourish and take form.

Chemically, the blood of the plant, chlorophyll, is very similar to our blood and, when consumed, it helps us to oxygenate and breathe life into every cell. Pretty cool, huh? Chlorophyll is also extremely cleansing and detoxifying.

Here are some other high vibrational foods for you to try:

1. Tree Fruits – try apples, pears, bananas, coconuts, avocados, nectarines, peaches, plums, apricots, oranges, lemons, limes, mangos, pomegranates, blueberries, cherries, and olives.

I firmly believe in the old saying, “You are what you eat.” (As well as, “You are what your body can do with what you eat!” We will talk more about that later!) Junk in = feeling like junk, and rich, living, nutrient-dense food = much happier body and mind. Don’t just take my word for it. Love your Liver for Balanced Hormones, Healthy Weight, and More!

liverI talk with clients all the time about the health of the liver.  The liver is such an important organ.  Did you know that our liver plays an integral part in our hormonal health?  In fact, the liver can be the root cause of many health conditions and diseases such as digestive troubles, constipation, low energy, allergies, hay fever, arthritis, diabetes, hypertension, obesity and infertility just to name a few.  So, if I have a client come to me with hormones imbalances or allergies, we talk about the liver’s possible role and usually work together to address the health of the liver.

So What Does the Liver Really do?

The liver is the largest internal organ in the body, and the most important organ of detoxification.  Everything that enters the bloodstream from your intestines, lungs, and skin is sent to the liver to be filtered.  The liver is continually filtering out toxins found in our food and environment.

So What are Toxins and Where do they Come From?

We are exposed to environmental toxins all the time.  We cannot ignore this fact.  Babies are even being born with toxins already in their tiny bodies as toxins from mom can and sometimes do cross through the placenta.  These toxins come from pollution, second-hand smoke, pesticides, food additives (like artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives), synthetic hormones (found in non-organic cow’s milk), hormone-mimicking chemicals in plastics (which hold our foods, are in non-stick coatings, or line receipts), too much alcohol and caffeine, chemicals in our household cleaning products and beauty products and more.

Yes, our bodies are designed to detox naturally, but, in modern times, they struggle to keep up with the increasing toxic load that we face today.  When the liver is taxed, we cannot process toxins or fats in an effective way.  When the body’s natural detoxification systems reach their limit, we begin to experience symptoms of toxicity including:

  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Fatigue
  • Foods allergies or intolerances
  • Skin problems
  • Weight gain or inability to gain weight
  • IBS, constipation, or irregular bowel movements
  • Weakened immunity
  • Headaches or other aches and pains
  • Depression, anxiety, or mood swings
  • Sleep Difficulties
  • Low sex drive
  • Sugar cravings

 So how can we start helping the liver?  

I’m a big proponent of liver cleansing at least annually, or, even more ideal, seasonally, and spring or summer is a natural time for cleansing the liver.  You can check out the details of and sign up for Heal Your Gut 201 Liver and GI Detox (June 2-16, 2015) here.  Here are my top 10 recommendations for loving your liver and helping it to become more functional, supported, and less taxed.

  1. Eliminate the toxic load of what you ingest through food and drink. Try to eat organic when possible, especially for the dirty dozen.  Reduce or eliminate your alcohol consumption, at least for a period of time.
  2. Reduce toxins that enter through your lungs and skin by choosing natural beauty products and non-toxic cleaning products for your home, when possible.  Also store foods in glass instead of plastic, never heat your foods in plastics, and opt for cast iron skillets or stainless steel pans without a non-stick coating.
  3. Consume warm water with lemon every morning upon rising which gently supports liver detoxification pathways and supports the GI tract daily.
  4. Stay hydrated by drinking half your body weight in ounces of clean, filtered water daily.
  5. For a boost in cellular regeneration and liver support, add 1 teaspoon of chlorophyll, spirulina, or any green powder to 10 ounces of water from once a day for a period of time.  I like Amazing Grass Green Superfood Original.  You can find this in my Healthwave dispensary in the Detox category, or at your local health food store or online.
  6. Support a healthy colon by adding extra fiber, such as organic chia or flax seeds, to meals. My Favorite Green Smoothie is loaded with healthy fiber.  Fiber is vital for removing toxins and excess hormones that are in the colon waiting to be excreted.
  7. Eat foods that naturally cleanse the liver, such as garlic, tumeric, grapefruit, lemons, limes, green tea, beets, carrots, apples, avocados, asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, radish, cucumber, spinach, watercress, parsley, cilantro, and other leafy greens.
  8. Have a green juice or green smoothie every day. Liquefied nutrients are easier to digest and assimilate.  Also, have cultured foods which are easier to digest and help to establish good bacteria in your intestines which aid in detoxing your body.
  9. Close the kitchen three hours before bedtime. By the time you go to bed, your body will be mostly finished with the process of digestion and, therefore, freed up, allowing energy for the liver to begin to clean the body of wastes while you sleep. If you are hungry before bed, hydrate by drinking a natural electrolyte drink. Or, if you tend towards constipation, have a magnesium citrate powder mixed with filtered water, such as Natural Vitality Natural Calm or Pure Essence Labs Ionic Fizz Magnesium Plus, which is calming and can also help with quality sleep.  You can find this in my Healthwave dispensary in the Sleep category, or at your local health food store or online.

Nourishing, Enzyme-Rich Breakfast

Ingredients:

1 organic apple, chopped into bite sized pieces

1 Tbsp sunflower seed butter (or any nut/seed butter)

1/2 Tbsp raw organic Cacao*

1 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp Maca powder*

dash of good quality Sea Salt

Instructions:

Combine all ingredients into a bowl, mix, and enjoy!

*Raw Cacao is chock full of minerals, like magnesium – which most people are low in, and antioxidants.  Maca is an adaptogen, meaning it helps our bodies to repair from the effects of stress.

Max’s No Bake Granola Bars

 

My kids LOVE to make and eat these healthy treats.  Enjoy!

Max's granola barsIngredients:

2 cups gluten-free rolled oats

1 and 1/4 cups almond butter

1 cup ground flax seeds

1/4 cup organic raisins

1/4 cup 60% cocoa chips

1/2 cup + 1 tablespoon honey

1/4 cup almond slivers

Instructions:

1. Mix all ingredients well in a large bowl.

2. Press bars into an 8.5×11 glass dish using the back of a spatula.  Cover and refrigerate a couple of hours or overnight.

3. Cut into rectangles while cold.  Store in the refrigerator.

This is the perfect snack to send to school, or for a quick, on-the-go meal replacement in a pinch.

Eat gluten-free whole foods with no additives or preservatives.

Personal Growth through Awareness and Care of the Chakras

We have 7 major energy centers, or chakras.  There are also many minor ones, but we will save that for another discussion!  The chakras are generally cone-shaped, with Chakrasfrontback2allthe small end of the cone in the core of your body and the wide end of the cone extending outward from your body anywhere from a few inches to many feet.  The first chakra begins in your perineum and the cone opens straight downward towards the earth.  The second through 6th chakras go from the lower belly up to the forehead, with a cone beginning in the core of your body and opening both straight in front of your body and a second cone beginning at the same place but opening straight behind you.  The seventh chakra starts at the crown of your head and the cone extends straight upwards towards the sky.  A well balance and energized chakra spins clockwise, opens to a wide diameter, extends several feet out from the body, and spins clockwise.

I first learned to feel chakra energies with my hands during my Massage Therapy certification program in 1999.  I felt a subtle change with the palm of my hand at the boundary of a classmate’s 2rd chakra at 2.5 feet in front of her lower belly.   The sensation was so very subtle, like a gentle breeze or a vague sensation of a pressure change in the air, that I wanted to see if I was really feeling anything.  Not so convinced about all this energy center stuff, I was shocked and amazed when I got the teacher to show me where she felt my classmate’s second chakra, and she landed in exactly the same spot!  That was the last of my focus on energy for a year or two because I just wasn’t ready for it, or particularly open to it, at that time in my life.  But, being a highly sensitive person, I became more and more aware of energetic patterns in my own life and body, and in massage therapy clients.  I eventually came to know, love, understand, and work with energy intimately.

Energetic imbalances in the chakras are usually caused by the way we choose to handle stressors and difficulties in day-to-day life.  The energy system can become chakra_chartcongested,  which results in the chakra energies becoming more closed, or the chakra spin to change, slow, or become counterclockwise.  Eventually, physical symptoms may even begin to occur.  Reestablishing balance and flow in the energy system releases stored stress and is a preventative and restorative step towards keeping the body functioning well, and pain and illness free!  Try this simple energy meditation to begin to experience the balance and energy that a cared-for energy system can bring to your life.
